Aquatic Technical Operator

This course provides candidates with the knowledge and skills relevant to the supervision and operation of an aquatic facility, plant and associated equipment and the monitoring and maintaining of water quality. This course is the industry standard for pool supervisors.

Bronze Medallion Accreditation

This course will enhance your personal survival skills while providing you with the knowledge and skills to develop the level of judgement, technique and physical ability required to safely carry out water rescues.

PLEASE BRING LONG SLEEVED T-SHIRT AND LONG PANTS on the day as you will be required to swim in clothes for some of the assessment tasks 

Theory

Safe water practices; survival in the water; self-preservation; recognising an emergency; assessment before and during a rescue; priorities for rescue; CPR theory; acceptance of responsibility; use of bystanders; emergency care and contacting emergency services.

Practical
Resuscitation:
d
emonstrate effective CPR
Swim: swim 400 metres continuously within 13 minutes. 100m freestyle, 100m breaststroke, 100m survival backstroke, 100m sidestroke.
Timed tow: swim 50 metres, then tow a patient 50m within 3 min 15 sec
Survival and Rescue Skills: demonstrate a range of survival techniques and appropriate rescues for a range of different aquatic environments and scenarios.
Spinal injuries: basic management of a suspected spinal injury in shallow and deep water
Rescue initiative: demonstrate initiative in effecting a rescue of two people who are in difficulty up to 15 metres from safety.

Successful candidates receive a:

  • Royal Life Saving Bronze Medallion certificate (valid for 12 months)

A Statement of Attainment for the below Units of Competency from the SIS National Sport, Fitness and Recreation Training Package will be issued upon successful completion of both the theoretical and practical components of the course.

Pool Lifeguard

The Royal Life Saving Pool Lifeguard Certificate is recognised throughout Australia and in many countries around the world. The certificate is an entry-level professional qualification that can lead to an exciting career in the aquatic and recreation industry.

The course offers expert professional training, and leads to a nationally accredited skill set - ‘SISSS00133 Pool Lifeguard Skill Set’.  Along with covering the skills and knowledge of first aid, resuscitation, swimming and water safety you will also learn about rescue and emergency response techniques, aquatic supervision, risk management, public relations, effective communication, conflict management and basic technical pool operations. These are valuable skills in any work context and lifeguarding is a dynamic, in-demand profession that can open up work opportunities in a wide variety of national and international locations. There are also opportunities for career advancement such as Supervisor, Duty Manager, Facility Manager, Swim Teacher and Trainer/Assessor.

Successful candidates will receive a statement of Attainment for Units of Competency from the SIS National Sport, Fitness and Recreation Training Package:

Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

Resuscitation refers to the actions taken to keep a casualty alive after their breathing and heartbeat has stopped. Resuscitation can mean the difference between life and death and early intervention with Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) can and will save lives. By taking the time to learn about resuscitation, you could save someone's life.

Royal Life Saving Resuscitation courses can give participants training and knowledge in a range of areas including CPR, Defibrillation and the chain of survival. All Royal Life Saving resuscitation training is delivered in accordance with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines

Successful candidates will receive a Statement of Attainment for Unit of Competency from the HLT National Health Training Package:

Provide First Aid

This course will provide you with the ability to recognise basic signs and symptoms of various illnesses and injury and subsequent provision of appropriate treatment or assistance.

Successful candidates will receive a Statement of Attainment for Units of Competency from the HLT Health Training Package:

  • HLTAID011 Provide First Aid
  • HLTAID010 Provide Basic Emergency Life Support
  • HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
 

Swim Teacher

The Royal Life Saving Swim Teacher Course provides the minimum requirements for those persons wishing to become a learn to swim instructor (for ages 4 and above). After completion of the course and your industry onboarding you will have the opportunity to apply for a RLS SA Swim Teacher Licence as outlined in the Guidelines for Safe Pool Operations (GSPO). 

It is assumed that participants are sufficiently physically fit and healthy to undertake this course. The following physical activities will occur during the course unless you advise of any physical difficulties or limitations: kneeling‚ bending over‚ crouching‚ standing, leaning, sitting, pushing, lifting weights, swimming 100m and tread water for 1min, towing, diving, carrying and other physical activity.
 
Pre-requisite: There are no pre-requisites for this course

Minimum age to complete this course is 16 years.
 
Upon successful course completion, participants will be issued a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the SISSS00132 skill set 'Swimming and Water Safety Teacher', comprised of the following units of competency:
 
  • SISCAQU020   Perform water rescues                    
  • SISCAQU023   Plan swimming lessons    
  • SISCAQU024   Teach water familiarisation, buoyancy and mobility skills           
  • SISCAQU025   Teach water safety and survival skills
  • SISCAQU026   Teach swimming strokes
We also offer an optional CPR qualification to all Swim Teacher candidates, which is conducted within the course (HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation). This is a requirement to obtain your RLS SA Swim Teacher License, and must be renewed every 12 months to keep you licence current. Please contact us if you already have a current CPR qualification and don't wish to complete this component.

A valid Working With Children Check (WWCC) is required to undertake your practical training hours at an aquatic facility, as well as for your Swim Teacher License application. Please visit the SA Government website here for more information.
